Spice Oil trends

Oleoresins are the flavour extracts obtained by the solvent extraction of the ground spices.
They have aroma of spice and possess the attributes which contribute to the taste such as
pungency. All the spices contain essential oils in varying proportions which can be extracted
by steam distillation. India is one of the leading producers of spices and instead of exporting
raw spices, it is advisable to export value-added products.

PRODUCT
2.1 Applications
The oleoresins and spice oils are preferred because of their microbiological advantages,
uniformity in flavour and pungency, easy to store and transport. They have several
applications like in the preparation of beverages, soup powders, confectionary, curries,
noodles, sauces, canned meat etc.
2.2 Compliance and Quality Standards
Compliance under the PFA Act is mandatory. ISI has specified quality standards vide IS
5832 & 7826 of 1975.

MARKET POTENTIAL
Oleoresins and spice oils have large domestic as well as export markets. They are consumed
by a broad spectrum of manufacturers like confectionary, noodles, beverages, sauces, canned
meat, soup powders, curries, poultry products and so on. Most of the end use industries are
growing steadily and demand is bound to increase. With increasing preference for quality
products, use of spices is rapidly replaced with oleoresins and spice oils. Exports of these
processed products, instead of raw spices, would also result in considerable value addition.

The Major Spice Oils are : Cumin Oil , Aniseed Oil, Coriander Oil, Black Pepper Oil

Agarwood Oil - The Different Grades

Agarwood Oil (Aloeswood ) is the gold of Assam, India and famous for its Mystical Fragrance comes from insecticidal wood. The insect make some fungi over wood and the place where fungi occur collected by using special knives and then put it into the water tank for 2-4 months for maturity and then used finally for distillation purposes.

How can we differentiate the grades of Aloeswood Or Agarwood Or oudh ?

The Grades are basically depend upon the area from where the wood is collected and also it depends upon the time of maturity. The Aloes wood with having good insect fungi and collected from Imfall, Nagaland State India is the superior grade and costing very much. We usually say it Grade A with liquid like appearance. Grade A- II is from rest wood which didn't used for first distillation. Grade C, D from the wood of Arunanchal Pradesh State, Grade E, F is from Assam State of India. The E and F is from immature wood of Aloeswood and it is costing lesser than other grades. Reference : Agarwood Oil India

Rose Oil

Since ancient times, rose has been used for several therapeutic purposes. Now, the Rose Oil is highly demanded from the several big pharmaceuticals of South East Asia and due to special demand from the countries like Japan and South Korea, we well planned to doubled our production to compete with Bulgarian distiller ( whose season is gone out now ) and to provide better product this time.

As everybody knows that Bulgarian Rose Oil is one of the top selling rose oil from Europe but now , Indian supplier of Rose Oil put their leg on to the path of Bulgarian manufacturers. One thing is important from technical point of view, the Indian Rose Oil have less Methyle Eugenol and Iso Eugenol which is becoming prohibited into cosmetics in developed countries. But for Rose Oil and tea tree , the association give some relaxation for the oils which have these isolates naturally but the upper limit is 3% for Methyle Eugenol and 2.5 % for Iso Eugenol.

Essential Oils and Special Therapies

As one can see the posts of this Blog for review and uses of several essential oils products but there are many therapies in which the essential oils are highly used. Raindrop therapy is one of the famous among them. Gary Young, was the founder of this technique in USA at 1980s. By and by the time goes, researchers and aromatherapists make some good amendments and make it more powerful than before.

In this technique, they hold up the hands towards the light and breath heavily and feel as the air with great energy is going from nose to the spinal cord and healing the whole body. As soon as the time goes, they started feeling healthy and all of there bone and spinal problems was resolved. Some of this technique's practitioners are claiming that by using this technique several chronic illnesses be alleviated within weeks or months. According to me, it is also possible because I believe in it and also feel the same using this technique.

Wholesale Lavender oil

Wholesale Lavender oil

Lavender Oil is one the most famous essential oil of the world. Lavender has been used since the time of the the ancient Romans in soaps, perfumes, powders and pillows. Lavender essential oil is used to treat inflammation, sunburn, respiratory problems and headaches. The essential oil of lavender is soothing, cleansing and re freshening.

Many people appreciate lavender (Lavandula angustifolia) for its aromatic fragrance, used in soaps, shampoos, and sachets for scenting clothes. The name lavender comes from the Latin root lavare, which means "to wash." Lavender most likely earned this name because it was frequently used in baths to help purify the body and spirit. However, this herb is also considered a natural remedy for a range of ailments from insomnia and anxiety to depression and mood disturbances. Recent studies bear out years of anecdotal evidence showing that lavender produces calming, soothing, and sedative effects.

Lavender is native to the mountainous zones of the Mediterranean where it grows in sunny, stony habitats. Today, it flourishes throughout eastern Europe, Australia, and the United States. Lavender is a heavily branched short shrub that grows to a height of roughly 60 centimeters. Its broad rootstock bears woody branches with erect, rod-like, leafy, green shoots. A silvery down covers the gray-green narrow leaves, which are oblong and tapered, attached directly at the base, and curled spirally.

The oil in lavender's small, blue-violet flowers is what gives the herb its fragrant scent. The flowers are arranged in spirals of 6 to 10 blossoms, forming interrupted spikes above the foliage.

Sandalwood Oil (Santalum Album ) - difficulties

While the South Zone Forest Departments Council Meeting on Sandalwood here on Wednesday with the participation of the Principal Chief Conservators of Forests and other senior forest department officers from the States of Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka pleaded for the enactment of a uniform legislation by the three States to curb smuggling of sandalwood and Red Sanders, the meeting also brought to focus the need for the enactment of an all-India legislation to control the smuggling of the precious forest produce.

One of the concerns emerging from the meeting was that the Centre was yet to enact a legislation despite the fact that a draft legislation was submitted by the State Governments to the Government of India almost 15 years ago. The draft proposals pointed out that the smuggling of sandalwood and Red Sanders has increased by leaps and bounds and has threatened the very existence of the crop, in addition to the social and economic evils it has generated in the country.

While sandalwood was confined to the States of Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh and Maharashtra, even in these States, there was no uniformity regarding the legal status of trees on private lands, extraction, transportation, possession and sale. Sandalwood is in demand both within and outside the country for various products such as sandalwood oil, agarbathies, dust and chips, incense, carvings and other handicraft articles, besides medicine.

Sandalwood trees also grow in private lands and therefore it was felt that any legislation will have to be comprehensive, so as not to put the private growers under any kind of harassment or disincentives to grow and protect the trees in their private lands. There are sandalwood oil distilleries in several States, which do not have sandalwood trees. Therefore, the bulk of the distillation in these distilleries is being done with the help of smuggled sandalwood, since sandalwood purchased in the open auction was too costly to be distilled, and it yielded only four per cent of oil.

Similarly, the main trade in sandalwood within the country is in the hands of private persons who engage themselves in obtaining the smuggled sandalwood in addition to the wood obtained from the government depots. In some States, possession of sandalwood is not an offence, and there are no rigid transit rules as well. In other States, no licence is required from the State Government for the purpose of starting or renewing distilleries. Export of sandalwood is permitted in the form of chips whose average weight is 50 gm and less, and there is no ban on export of other commodities like handicrafts, carvings and sandalwood oil.

Sandalwood as a commodity is very handy for being smuggled in view of its high price and physical manoeuvrability to carry them in various forms. A few kg (pieces) of sandalwood that are carried fetches a very good price.

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Government will soon introduce in the Assembly a Bill to ban sandal oil extraction in the private sector in the State, Minister for Forest Benoy Viswom has said.

Addressing a seminar on `People and Forests,' organised by his department here on Wednesday, the Minister said the State had already obtained the required clearance from the Union Government to go ahead with the legislation. Simultaneously, the Government would set up a sandal oil extraction unit in the public sector to put to use the sandalwood collected by the Forest Department from the reserve forests of Marayur in Idukki district, he said.

Mr. Viswom said the department was working on the formalities connected with declaring the forests surrounding Silent Valley National Park as its buffer zone. This was necessary to ensure the long-time viability of the national park, he said.

"The buffer zone is a firm commitment of our Government," he said. Referring to the ongoing encroachment of revenue land in Munnar and adjoining Mankulam, Mr. Viswom said the best way to check the encroachers was to bring such areas under the ambit of the forest conservation laws.

Reserve forests

The Government was seized of the need to declare as `reserve forests' such areas resumed from Kannan Devan Company and vested with the Revenue Department. He said the notification for this would be issued "within a matter of few weeks."

"If we neglect the encroachments in this region any longer, Munnar will be finished. The senseless manner in which development is going on in this area would destroy Munnar's climate. Armed with fake title deeds, encroachers are systematically taking over large tracts of land with exceptional ecological significance around this hill station. Our Government has the political will to stop it," the Minister said.

Inaugurating the seminar, Chief Minister V.S. Achuthanandan reiterated his Government's commitment to conservation.

Mukhallat Attar - A long lasting essence

According to the general perspective, the natural Attars are not so much long lasting in comparison with Synthetic preparations. The major thing in attars are the way of manufacturing, method of distillation and combination of several smells into one.

There are several types of Attars, such as Single Note Attars (Rose, Kewra, Champa, Bela). Perfumes, such as Shamama(All types), Mukhallat , Majmua etc.

Here we will discuss about Mukhallat Attar. What it is actually? Mukhallat is a Arabic world , means the mixture of several floral essences such as Rose, Saffron, Bela, Genda etc. But we used special natural things such as Musk Ambrette Oil Or Musk Dana Or Ambrette Seed Essential Oil for giving long lasting smell , Costus Root Oil for earthy note , Agarwood oil for more consistency.

India’ role in the Agarwood trade

India was previously the centre of a thriving industry and trade based on agarwood. Products produced and traded included wood, chips, powder and oil, being used mainly for perfumes, incense, and medicines (including Ayurvedic). Prior to the 1991 export ban on wood and wood products, Mumbai served as the main exporting centre to Middle Eastern countries. Agarwood harvested from north-east Indian States, predominantly Assam, was taken to Hojai in Assam where it was processed into chips, dust and oil. Importers and exporters previously supplied traders in Mumbai and Calcutta, primarily with Assamese agarwood, but suppliers have largely shifted their base to south-east Asian countries, particularly Singapore, owing to the scarcity of Indian agarwood.
Traders interviewed reported that the decline in the trade started 15-20 years ago, coinciding with the decline in the availability of high quality Indian agarwood. Even with the decline in trade, however, there is still an agarwood chip, oil and powder processing industry in India. North-east India continues to dominate India’s agarwood processing industry, with Assam and particularly Hojai still playing a major role, and Mumbai being the main location from which agarwood is traded and exported.
According to Heuveling van Beek and Phillips (1999), Indian importers buy many tonnes of low grade agarwood powder for distillation purposes. Many large processing units are located in Assam, Chakrabarty et al.(1994) reporting that a total of approximately 200 agarwood oil distilleries operated in the towns of Hojai, Islamanagar and Nilbagan in Naogaon district in 1993. The number of distilleries in current operation is unknown, but interviews conducted suggested that there are currently far more processing units in Assam than in 1993. Unconfirmed local enquiries suggest that there may be more than 1500 processing units in Hojai alone, although, according to available information, the Industry Department has issued licences to only 29 (unlicensed processing units are presumably operating illegally).

Agarwood Plantation in Assam

Agarwood Oil is highly used in perfumery industry as it have very long lasting smell. The Aquilaria genus contains some 15 species of evergreen trees which grow to 120 ft. (40m). The trees are found growing in the low and medium altitude primary forests of Southeast Asia. The Bourbon variety, is heavy, olive green, and richer than other geranium oils.

It has rosy, slightly sweet, minty fragrance and an uplifting effect. Its rosy aroma comes from Geraniol, an isolate of Geranium Oil, in leaves. This alcohol is found in higher concentration in Pelargonium roseum than in other pelargonium.

One gentleman who is a major jasmine broker told from that area told us that he daily sells 10-15 metric tons of the fresh flowers which are provided by over 2000 farmers. The peak season for harvesting the flowers is from March-July with smaller amounts produced in August/September and January/February. Agarwood Oil India

Agarwood, aloeswood, eaglewood, jinkoh, gaharu are names for the world’s most valuable incense. This resinous material is produced by tropical rainforest trees and has been used for centuries as incense and in traditional medicine. In the past, old growth Aquilaria and Gyrinops trees were indiscriminately cut to find the resin (usually hidden within the center of only a few old trees). Today in many countries of Southeast Asia where the tree was once native, it has become very rare due to increased harvesting. The resinous wood or oil extracted from the inside of some trees is extremely valuable since it is highly regarded for use during Buddhist and Islamic cultural activities as well as an important ingredient in many traditional medicines. It is also an extremely important component in traditional Japanese incense ceremonies. Although most people in the United States and Europe are not familiar with this aromatic resinous wood, its use as incense (called aloeswood) is mentioned several times in the bible. People in the United States, Europe and other countries that have had the opportunity to smell the fragrance of this extraordinary incense find it very appealing and pleasant. Agarwood Oil India

Modern evidence for the antiseptic powers of essential oils

Towards the end of the19th century, the first acknowledged research to prove the antiseptic properties of essential oils was that undertaken by Chamberland ( 1887). This was followed early in the 20th century by Cavel's research into the individual effect 35 essential oils on microbiology cultures in sewage. The most effective oil in terms of the quantity required to render inactive 1000 ml of culture was found to be thyme (0.7 ml) . Two other well-knowb oils showing high efficacy were sweet orange ( 1.2 ml, 3rd) and peppermint ( 2.5 ml, 9th). The antiseptic power of several oils now been proved to be many times greater than that of phenol. Certain essential oils have also been shown to be effective against different bacteria, e.g. lemon, which is one of best in its antiseptic and bactericidal properties, neutralizing both the typhus bacillus and staphylococcus aureus in a matter of minutes. Cinnamon kills the typhus bacillus even when diluted to 1 part in 300.

Historical use of essential oils

Plants ad their extracts have been used since time immemorial to relieve pain, aid healing, kill bacteria and thus revitalize and maintain good health. Many books have now been written on aromatherapy, its history usually being included in more or less detail. Suffice it to say here that, although the word itself was not coined until this century, the distilled extracts from plants - the essential oils - have been employed by humankind for countless years in religious rites, perfumery and hygiene. Cedar wood oil, know to have been used by the Egyptians for embalming and for hygienic purposes 5000 years ago, was probably the first 'distilled' oil to have been produced although the process used is open to speculation. Both the lavender plant and its essential oil were used by the abbess Hildegard of Bingen as early as the 12th century, and by the 15th century it is thought that essential oils of turpentine , cinnamon, frankincense , juniper, rose and sage were also known and used in perfumes and medicines by the beginning of the 17th century.

How the brain process odor ?

Odor are the effect of volatile molecules that float through the air , rushing through our nosttrils as we inhale. There are three stages in the process of smelling. Fragrance begins with the reception of odor molecules, which as they are inhaled, bind to the olfactory epithelium ( receptor cells that contain, in all, some 20 million nerve ending ). Odor transmission occurs when a message is fired to the right and left olfactory bulbs, located above and behind the nose at the base of the brain, each about the size and shape of the small Lima bean. At this point a variety of cells and neurons interpret, amplify and transmit the message to the limbic system.
